Become a Private Investigator

A Virginia Private Security Association

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Servies (DCJS) oversees the Private Security industry. We recommend you review the DCJS website to learn about the agency and how to become a registered private investigator.: https://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/

DCJS defines a Private Investigator (or PI) as “any individual who engages in the business of, or accepts employment to make, investigations to obtain information on crimes or civil wrongs; the location, disposition, or recovery of stolen property; the cause of accidents, fires, damages, or injuries to persons or to property; or evidence to be used before any court, board, officer, or investigative committee.”

Anyone can become a registered Private Investigator in Virginia if they meet the requirements of age, do not have a felony criminal record, and complete the required training (a 60 hour course over 2-3 weeks). No experience in law enforcement, investigation, or higher education is required to become registered.

In addition to private investigators, DCJS regulates several categories including: Alarm Respondent, Electronic Security, Armed Security Officer, Locksmith, Armored Car Personnel, Personal Protection Specialist, Bail Bonds,  Security Canine Handlers, Central Station Dispatcher, Unarmed Security Officer. More information about these categories is available on the DCJS website.

We have additional information and an Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, pertaining to info on firearms, how PISA can help, and related questions on this page.
